Assault and Violent Acts at Work

Nearly two million American workers report having been the victims of workplace violence each year. Workplace violence includes any threat or act of physical violence, intimidation, harassment, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs on the jobsite. Homicide is currently the fourth leading cause of fatal occupational injuries across the U.S. Approximately 500 workers a year are the victims of homicide in the workplace. For women, homicide has actually become the leading cause of death on the job. In whatever form it takes place, workplace violence is a major concern for employees and employers nationwide.

Maine workers who sustain a work-related attack or assault may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits for lost time from work, payment of medical bills, and more.
